Henry J. Young Award - Margaret Louis Bouillon Burg, July 2024
Margaret Louise Bouillon Burg was born in Sacramento, California the daughter of the late Wallis August Bouillon and
Amanda Ures. Margaret’s father was born in New Orleans, Louisiana of French and German ancestry. The Bouillon family came from the French Principality of Montbelliard which was Lutheran and ruled by the German house of Württemberg. Her French ancestors came to New Orleans by way of Haiti and Cuba. Her paternal surnames include Bouillon, Teitenberg, Gadpaille, Martin, Ponnier, Ferrand, Depoutot, Mathomon, Fallot, Camus, and Winter.
Margaret’s mother Amanda Ures was born in Ely, Nevada, to Croatian emigrants from Mutilic and Bunic, Croatia, then part of the Austro Hungarian Empire. The Croatians were working in copper and silver mines. Margaret’s maternal surnames include: Jurasovich (changed Ures), Papes, Bakaric, and Crnkovic.
Margaret graduated from Hiram Johnson High School in Sacramento and attended Sacramento State College. She met an airman from East Propect, York County, Pennsylvania named Glenn Alden Burg who was stationed at Mather Air Force Base in Sacramento. They were married in 1964 in Sacramento and were soon thereafter transferred to Fairbanks, Alaska where they lived for a year. Upon Glenn being honorably discharged from the Service, they relocated to Glenn’s native York County. They moved to their farm in Conewago Township in June 1967. Margaret continues to live on part of the farm.
Margaret and Glenn were the parents of two children, Daniel Burg, and Susan Burg. While raising her family, Margaret was involved with the Elementary School PTA, Northeastern High School Band Parents, served as Strinestown Community Fire Company Secretary for twenty-five years. Margaret obtained a paralegal certificate from Penn State York in 1992 and worked in the legal field for Wolfson & Associated and CGA Law Firm until retiring in 2017.
Margaret became a member of South Central Pennsylvania Society in 1994. She has served as Vice President, President and as Treasurer since 2001. She has been active with working on publications for the society including a special publication on entitled York Pennsylvania Director of the Poor Minutes (2002) SCPGS Special Publication No. 60. She indexed World War I letters from soldiers and others from the scrap book compiled by Mildred Grass (2013) SCPGS Special Publication No. 75. Margaret compiled abstracts from the Parish Telephone monthly Newletter which was written by the Rev. Adam Stump for
the Quickel’s Lutheran Charge which included Quickel’s Church, St. Paul’s (Wolf’s) Church, Paradise (Salem) Church and Mt. Zion Lutheran Church. This was a published book.
Margaret has done extensive research on the ancestors of her late husband, in particular on the Burg family. She did research and worked on the history of Lower Windsor Township, York County, Pennsylvania with the late John Overmiller. Margaret has enjoyed traveling and being engaged in genealogical research. She currently is translating births and marriages from Croatian records of the area where her grandmother is from. Margaret has become very involved in quilting in recent years.
